Diets and Diabetes

What can you do and what can you eat?

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and you find yourself asking this very question you are not alone. Millions of people face diabetes successfully everyday by simply following a few simple rules and guidelines.

What can I eat? This question is not as hard to answer as you might think. Using a little common sense and following the directions given to you by your Doctor or nutritionist can make this easy to answer. You will learn which foods you may eat, how much and how often. Once you learn the basics and are comfortable with your choices you will be able to relax and enjoy what you eat instead of constantly being worried about your choices.

When it comes to nutrition one of the most important things to remember is which fats you can and can not eat. An example of a bad fat or one to avoid would be coconut oil or palm oil when cooking. Instead you should use a good fat such as olive oil or corn oil. Fat free foods can be a good choice for many people as they have fewer calories. Another important point when talking about nutrition and fats is to avoid saturated fats as people with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing heart disease. Trans fats like saturated fats should also be avoided as they will raise your cholesterol levels.

Make sure you include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet and choose as many different colored items as possible. This will help insure that you are getting all of the vitamins your body needs to stay healthy.

Tracking is another important step in controlling your diabetes. You should closely monitor your food intake so that you do not over eat an item that may be high in fat content or carbohydrates. Carbohydrates have a direct impact on your blood glucose levels. You should keep track of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and anything with artificial sweeteners as these will produce sugar alcohols and have an effect on your blood sugar levels as well.

When dieting and dealing with diabetes you may wonder how will I ever be able to put together a safe and nutritious meal? Relax there are hundreds of resources available for someone with just your problem. There are cookbooks galore offered everywhere from your local library or bookstore to on line stores and even various nutritionists and doctors offices. You may even join a diabetes support group or on line forum to meet other people with diabetes so that you may share information and recipes.
